For years we have had a fly kicking around our files labeled “Ugly Bug, Boca Grande” with no other information. From time to time we pull it out, admire it, shrug and put it back. As we were putting together our snook and redfish collection, the Ugly Bug resurfaced begging to be put on line. The Scates Shrimp and St. Alfonzo are shrimp patterns meant to be fished in shallow water or pretty high up in the water column, the Ugly Bug can get down and get down quickly.

With the weight (a 3/16” Dazl Eye) near the front the Ugly Bug has a jigging action. We have our own hand made epoxy eyes sticking out the back and the heavy fluorocarbon weed guard up front. All this tied on tied on the Gamakatsu SS15 hook.
