New Tarpon Flies for 2010:
Shrimp and worms, black and purple.
Shrimp? Two new - well one old, one new, flies that look a lot like shrimp. The Night Time Poon Fly is an pattern from years ago that has been forgotten until now. It was fished in the ‘90’s, still recognized until about 10 years ago but clinging to life in our files. It’s slightly updated but pretty true to the original. The Studebaker Hawk has roots in some older patterns with it’s tall tail and sparse attitude. We worked in a material from the Spey tradition, added a little mohair and employed some funky fur to make a sparse but effective shrimp fly.
Worms? We probably should have stocked a worm pattern years ago but we never came across one we liked. Over time it became obvious that an effective worm fly had to have the ability to be just in or just under the surface, it also had to move but not to much and absolutely had to leave that little wake so characteristic of the Palolo worm. We sent prototypes out to captains last year and this fly was a winner. We finally had a pattern we like and the tarpon really like, the Magic Worm.
Black and Purple? ‘Cause it’s a great color combination especially early season and at the ends of the day. It’s also a killer Everglades color! So we tied two of our favorite patterns with these colors. Before we even listed the black and purple Fox Fur Tarpon Fly we sold dozens, it’s a very successful fly. And because a black fly on the surface at night is killer in all sorts of saltwater situations we had to tie a Boehm’s Gurgler in these colors. We are sure this fly will catch fish; tarpon, snook, stripers, redfish, from Central America to the rocky Northeast.
